You are repeating many things that have been debunked already, and seem to have no desire to get to the truth of any of it. You subscribe to the viewpoint that "anyone is better than Obama," and why? Because you think he is a Muslim? All I see in responses like these is xenophobia. ... You are tossing out a man who has respect for my beliefs AND yours, to replace him with a man who only has respect for yours. How do you think that makes me feel?       i love you grandma, i truly do. however i can not support bad behavior from anyone. in my adult life i have always fallen on the side of the greater good. i have stood for human rights and the equal representation of americans everywhere.

      at the end of the day we as americans are FREE to say and do what we wish so long as those endeavors do not infringe on the rights of others.

    • Leila Benoit Uh.... okay. Let's see. Yes, I am an atheist, but I am still curious about the beliefs of others. I am particularly curious about the things I mentioned above because I am unfamiliar with the whole mindset, as Jehovah's Witnesses did not involve themselves in politics or political speculation. So I am honestly curious and am interested in honest answers. Also, none of my viewpoints on anything are a result of being "upset" with my parents. I dearly love my parents and don't hold them responsible for raising me in a cult; they were taken in, too. I am not some rebellious teenager looking to make a statement. I have come to my positions through much thought over many years. Also, I never even talked much about religion to Jeremy. His journey is his to make, not mine to hijack. He came to his position totally on his own, in fact I was surprised when he told me he was an atheist. Let's see what else... I would resent your implication that I am the devil or from the devil or whatever but... lol... Wow. Oh, and I don't "hate Romney." I disagree strongly with the man on issues of civil rights, which are important to me because they affect my personal safety and the safety of others. I respect the right of others to vote for him. The reason I have been commenting on peoples' Romney v. Obama posts is because much of it is easily disproved and I would ask people to be responsible human beings and source their material and make an effort to post things that are actually true. When we post things to Facebook we should be prepared to defend our positions. We should also make an effort not to spread lies and misinformation and conspiracy theories. So - to summarize: I don't hate Romney. I disagree with him politically, and while respecting your right to vote for him, I would wish that you would post things that are responsible and true in support of him, and not things that are false. My only argument with supporters (of ANYONE) is that they should be factual and stop posting untrue things.

      being atheist is some thing we have in common not something we arrived at because of some difficulty in our lives. 

      leila is not upset with her parents she is heartbroken       that they are still in a cult (jehovas witnesses not morman, although mormanism is a cult too). they even moved next door to a kingdom hall. 

      leila and i both feel that romney is on the wrong side of civil liberties and human rights. this time around the republican platform has vowed to IMPOSE religious tenants on the public en mass. our country was founded with freedom OF and FROM religion in mind. the separation of church and state MUST be absolute.

      as to me being a good christian, grandma... i used to be on fire for god. i was wholly dedicated. as i grew in age and knowledge i could no longer defend the doctrine i once held so dear. there was just no science to support the information i was taught in church.

      lastly to the whole devil comment, i know those passages well. i heard them often growing up. it is also said that the devil never misses a service. leila is not the devil (nor do i appreciate the inference). or the even in the smallest of ways a catalyst for my changes. 

      if you would like to talk more here on facebook or we could go to coffee on sunday when we come to town. i would welcome the engaging discussion.
    • Steven Topich I hope you don't mind if I hijack the thread to talk about the video you posted. After watching I noticed that some of the clips in the video with his differing views are seperated by years and it is only natural that some people views change as they get older. 

      I am sure if someone wanted to make a video of the same thing with Barack, that is if there isn't one already done, they most likely could. 

      I cannot fault a person whose views change. I am not by any stretch of the imagination a supporter of Romney, in fact if I vote it will most likely be for the current president. Even though I may not agree with all he has done in the past few years, he has still done more than his detractors give him credit for.

      Yes Jeremy, folks are entitled to change their mind but its sad when its a as important as this, and right now I'm not talking about Romeny or obama. And I'm am not going to write you a LETTER of dos and don'ts and why and why nots as I think now it will do no good... And it certainly was not my intention to air our dirty laundry on facebook but I do not have your e-mail address to write to you directly anymore.......We all have to make choices in life and hope like heck it's the right one...... It's unfortunate that they couldn't abide having an opposing viewpoint in their life. I get along just fine surrounded by opposing viewpoints. lol

I have had family members - cousins block me for the same thing. Oh so "christian" of them.     • Leila Benoit Lol... I feel you. It's very frustrating... They seem to get so upset when I simply present a different viewpoint. It's like they think I am persecuting them by voicing my opinion, which is different from theirs. .... They want me to respect their view (which I try to do; though I disagree and even think religion is harmful, I am certainly not out to "convert" anyone), but they don't seem able to respect mine. So many people immediately resort to "otherizing" me, calling names, calling my viewpoint stupid, ignorant, immature, the result of "rebellion" or spite... things I don't do to them. It's disheartening, especially when their own Bible says that we will recognize the true followers of Christ by their fruits; love, peace, lol. I have to say, Anna, it's nice to meet another atheist. We should hang out sometime lol.

Does EVERYTHING have to be an argument on FaceBook????? So sick of this DRAMA, DRAMA, DRAMA......"As for me and my House, We will serve the Lord!" The Bible stands as my guideline, and there ain't nothing you can say or do to change my viewpoint,....Love You All, You live your way I will live mine. When it comes down to offending people in my family, or church family that is where I draw the line. This has gone too far.....I will not be part of it. God Bless and have a good day.

    @john: no, things are not ok, and this is not / was not a "fight" its was debate. 

    @mom: are you talking about     gramndma dot? it was not an argument till 5 minutes ago. "you people" (fundamentalist christians) post lies and try to pass it off as truth, i call "you" on it and thus far the only one showing any sign that they are willing to at least follow the links to sources provided is aunt kathy (as far as our intimate circle goes). can we agree to disagree? yes! yes we can! however that is not what is happening here. and do not confuse the "tone" of my retorts because it is impossible to convey inflection thorough short facebook messages.

    @everyone when i started posting and responding to stuff on facebook a couple weeks ago it was and still is my aim to provoke critical thinking. im so tired of the emotionally and mentally lazy attitude i see all over the internet. so here it goes. 

    if "people" (fundamentalist christians) keep posting baseless accusations, lies, and what-not while attempting to pass it off as fact, i / we can and will take the time that "they" did not, to look up the info and comment. rather than "people" getting mad that i / we have offered a contrasting viewpoint please... FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!... source your reasons! we all have a responsibility to be fair in these public forums. as irl (in real life) acquaintances, friends and family we do not have the luxury and of anonymity, and that makes it harder for us to speak our minds. i know full well that all of "you" believe leila and i are going to hell... "you" are ENTITLED to your opinion on that. we (all of us everywhere) are ENTITLED to our opinions too. as to offending people. i have the same rights as "you" do to express myself. i'm not sorry that i have offended "people" in by sourcing comments. i told the truth, "they" did not. "they" are tale bearing", gossip mongering, fostering distension, spouting hatred, exclusion and bigotry all stacked on a bible wrapped in a flag. how is that christian? in any stretch of the imagination? this special blend of american fundamentalist xenophobic nationalism is DESTROYING america, and OUR family. i will make SURE that the three little lives i'm responsible for will have an EVEN understanding of this world forged with love and temperance though education not ignorance.

    so sit there and grimace at what we say, make your phone calls and send your messages of outrage because you cant face the fact that bigotry rules your life and how it scares you that have no clue how to get it back...

    some of you know me well enough by know to know what comes next. I will not cow down to a "bully". i will not let others repress our inalienable rights. unlike most of "you" i fought to keep the stripes on our flag red and to preserve ALL OF OUR RIGHTS under the constitution. i didn't sacrifice 6+ years of my life (the sacrifice of my family not withstanding) with exclusions or qualifications. how many of "you" can say the same?. not many... i can't name 5. and none of them that i can name have participated in any of the debates i have put forth. not only that, i have a challenge for all of "you" how many of you would die for what you believe in? and i don't mean in a metaphorical sense. i mean non life. death.

    regardless of what you think of us, leila and i would go out of our way to help ANY of you in need. without exclusion, without pretense, loathing, fear or conditions, without asking for anything in return because it is simply the right thing to do. so sit there and qualify your love for us and others withe all the self serving rhetoric you can. while you love us "even tho" we are different, we love all of you without prejudice or qualification because there is no space in our hearts for hatred. 

    how presumptuous of us to think that in all the ancient cosmos that we are all that is beautiful and perfect. that all this is for us. that out of the last 14 billion years of existence in our 8000 years of understanding, the last 235 years on this stolen turtle in the space our infinitesimal spec of life on this dirt we call america, that we are right about anything... the truth of it all is that we are spinning blindly through space with only the crudest of understanding as to all that is around us. the least we can do is be decent to one another and respect each-others individuality. that much i know. that much i can do.

    in closing, i am not mad at anyone and since we all live less than an hour from each other i would be more than happy to sit down and talk with any of you if you would like to vent, ask questions or just hang out and talk.

Facebook gives me an error message when I try to get to it. Ok. Here goes. I was not trying to be "argumentative" in anything I said. I understand the confusion because it IS hard to convey inflection via text. I don't really understand how it's offensive when I bring to your attention that something is untrue. I would hate to go on believing something that has already been debunked, and if I found out my friends knew and didn't tell me I'd be a little miffed. Lol. Again; we have not been trying to argue with anyone or "convert" anyone to our side. I don't think asking for people to be honest and source their material so that we can get to the crux of the matter, is offensive or "argumentative." Out of respect for you, we have taken care to source all our material before we post it. But it's offensive and argumentative for us to ask you to do the same, to be sure you're posting things that are real, instead of slander, rumor and untruth? I just do not understand. I'm sorry you took it that way. I would never have thought to classify critical thinking as "drama." I also thought that if someone posted something to Facebook, it was an invitation to talk about it. I didn't realize that sometimes people only want to have their views validated and are not looking for conversation. Anyway. Be assured that we weren't trying to fight or "argue." We were just trying to ask people to fact check what they were posting, and to post things that build up rather than tear down. Now that I see that is not welcome, I won't bother anymore. But if you come to my Facebook page, which all are welcome to do, be prepared to think critically and present a defense for what you say.
