However, I just heard from a friend recently moved to Tennessee and they are still voting for the same values that our country was founded on...Christian values.

Under the freedom afforded to all of us, shouldn't the KKK be allowed to believe what they want to believe? What about Christians? Why should any group be disregarded? I'm not a humanist, but I feel that you can believe and behave in any way you want as long as it doesn't infringe upon any one else's freedom. That day will never come when we can all live and let live. Because we as humans want someone else to make those concessions, rather than it starting with ourselves. We point one finger at the other guy wanting them to change, while 4 are pointing back at us. And until we come to the point where we accept the dignity all peoples (Atheists, Humanists, Christians, Jews, Arabs, KKK, Witches, Gays , Pastors, Drug Addicts, Pedophiles, Prostitutes, Mitt Romney and the Rich, Politicians, Lawyers, and the list could go on and on... not just the one's who agree with our ideology and lifestyle..nothing will change. don't FORCE me to believe YOUR bronze age concepts of what being a good person is all about. science is a thing, the earth is 4.5 billion years old, jesus would have been brown not white, moses did not have horns, the earth revolves around the sun, the earth is not flat and yes! we do know why the tides go in and out.
for so many the thin veneer of civility is all that keeps them from freaking out and becoming lawless cannibals. for others (leila and i for example) we are good with out the expectation of an eternal reward -or- ever present threat of eternal punishment. if we ignore all who reach out and ask for help as we walk through our lives blindly "seeking gods face" when we age and die we will have done nothing to make this world better. how can a lifetime spent selfishly seeking an eternal reward be BETTER and more righteous than helping those in need?

the dignity of all peoples does not allow for abhorrent / deviant behavior. drug addicts & pedophiles should not be allowed to live and let live because they are hurting other people. they are not the norm. they are the deviation from it. drug addicts are victims and slaves to their addictions. using the SCIENCE of mental health resources it is possible to surmount an addiction.
pedophiles. theirs is not a condition of birth it is a condition of weak of mind and will. 3000 years ago it was ok for men to choose, wed and bed child brides. now... not so much.
we have evolved as a society. we stopped (for the most part) treating females as a commodity rather than whole persons. in america women are still being oppressed. not as bad as other countries tho. recently a family refused to let their 16 year old daughter go through with an arranged marriage. the groom to be and another man slit the child's throat. here in america an ex boyfriend cut the nose off his ex girlfriends face because she didn't want to be raped by him. our sex negative culture is KILLING our children faster than anything else and the answer is not more god. the answer is more education. people cling to the bible so literally, so steadfastly. doesn't it say in there something about what good does it do you if you gain the whole world and loose your soul in the process? our children are dying because of our ignorance.
as a nation we are holding ourselves back by clinging to myth and superstition over reality. my mom and dad are both over 50 and they learned 2 months ago, from me, that there are 6 genders not 2. i learned that when i was 30, my 14 year old learned it when he was 12. i, along with the rest of the world about a month ago, learned that autism is caused as a result of the mothers auto immune response to her catching a cold while she is pregnant. since the mid 1700's 2 million new species have been discovered on this earth. in 2009 19258 were discovered. and each year we discover thousands more. less than 50% are insects, 11% are plants, 7% are fungi, 5% are microbes, 3% are chordates and the remainder are other forms of invertebrates.
we are all growing inside, we are learning, we are changing and we are evolving. this is easily accepted by most, even the devout religious, so why is it such a leap to think outside the book? the instruction manual for life is not written in a 400 year old reinterpretation of the bible auntie. it is written in the rocks, the trees, your mother, your sister, the face of the beggar and in the stars themselves.
